Why Visit Nahargarh Fort?

Discover what makes this destination truly special

Nahargarh Fort stands on the edge of the Aravalli Hills, providing a stunning view over the city of Jaipur. Built primarily as a defensive structure, it formed a protective ring for the city along with Amer Fort and Jaigarh Fort. The fort's name translates to 'abode of tigers,' and it was originally named Sudarshangarh. Visitors can explore the fort's ramparts and gateways, which lead to the main palace complex. The highlight within the fort is Madhavendra Bhawan, built by Sawai Madho Singh II. This two-story building features twelve identical suites for his queens, connected by corridors decorated with delicate frescoes. The suites are designed so the maharaja could visit any queen's chamber without the others knowing. The fort also contains a wax museum and a Sheesh Mahal (mirror palace), which are more recent additions. The overall atmosphere is less crowded than Amer Fort, offering a more relaxed experience with some of the best panoramic views of Jaipur, especially at sunset.

History & Significance

Learn about the story and cultural importance of this destination

History

Built in 1734 by Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II, the founder of Jaipur, Nahargarh Fort was intended as a royal retreat and a formidable defensive structure. It was originally named Sudarshangarh. According to local legend, the construction was obstructed by the spirit of a Rathore prince, Nahar Singh Bhomia, after whom the fort was eventually renamed to appease the spirit. The fort was later expanded in 1868 by Sawai Ram Singh II. The most significant addition, Madhavendra Bhawan, was built in the late 19th century by Sawai Madho Singh II for his queens. The fort was never attacked during its history and has remained an important landmark of Jaipur.

Significance

Nahargarh Fort holds major historical and architectural significance as part of Jaipur's three-fort defense system. Its strategic location on the Aravalli ridge provided a watchful eye over the city below. Architecturally, Madhavendra Bhawan is a fine example of Indo-European design, with its unique layout of interconnected suites for the queens, showcasing the lifestyle of the royals. Today, its primary significance for visitors is its unparalleled viewpoint, offering sweeping vistas of the entire city, making it a popular spot for photography, especially during sunrise and sunset.
