The gallery is located in the Manikyavelu Mansion, a colonial-style residence originally owned by the Yuvaraja of Mysore. The mansion was built by Raja Manikyavelu Mudaliar, a manganese mine owner. After India's independence, the property was acquired by the government. In 2000, the Ministry of Culture decided to establish a southern centre for the National Gallery of Modern Art here. After extensive refurbishment of the heritage building and the addition of a new gallery block, NGMA Bangalore was officially inaugurated in 2009. It stands as the third NGMA in India, after the ones in Delhi and Mumbai, aimed at making modern art more accessible to the public in South India.
