National Gallery of Modern Art - Delhi's Premier Art Museum

The National Gallery of Modern Art was formally established on March 29, 1954, by the Government of India. The gallery is located in Jaipur House, a butterfly-shaped building with a central dome, which was designed by Sir Arthur Bloomfield and constructed in 1936 as the Delhi residence for the Maharaja of Jaipur. After India's independence, the building was acquired to serve as a national art gallery. The idea was to create a space to preserve and exhibit the works of modern Indian artists. A new wing was added in 2009, significantly increasing the exhibition space and providing modern facilities for art display and storage.

NGMA is significant as the custodian of India's modern artistic heritage. It holds the most important collection of modern and contemporary Indian art in the country, documenting the transition of art from academic styles to experimental modernism. The gallery is vital for art education and research, housing an extensive reference library. Its location in a prominent heritage building near the India Gate war memorial adds to its cultural stature.
