Overview

The National Gallery of Modern Art (NGMA) in Delhi is the country's main institution for modern and contemporary Indian art. Housed in the elegant Jaipur House, a former residence of the Maharaja of Jaipur, the gallery offers a journey through India's artistic evolution from the mid-19th century to the present day. The collection is spread across several floors of the original heritage building and a newer wing, showcasing a vast array of paintings, sculptures, and graphic arts.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is from October to March, when Delhi's weather is cool and pleasant, making it comfortable to walk around the complex and its gardens. The summer months from April to June are extremely hot, although the gallery itself is air-conditioned. The monsoon season from July to September can be humid with heavy rain. Winter mornings (December-January) can be foggy but are otherwise an excellent time to visit.
Peak Crowd: December-January, weekends, and national holidays, when tourist season is at its height.
Moderate Crowd: October-November and February-March, particularly on weekday afternoons.
Low Crowd: April-June (peak summer) and July-September (monsoon season), especially on weekdays.

How to Reach

Air

Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) is the nearest airport, located about 15 km away. A taxi or the Airport Express Metro line can take you to the city center in about 45-60 minutes.

Train

New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS) is about 5 km away, and Hazrat Nizamuddin Railway Station (NZM) is about 6 km away. Both are major stations well-connected to all parts of India. You can hire an auto-rickshaw or taxi from either station.

Road

The gallery is located at the prominent India Gate Hexagon, which is well-connected by road to all parts of Delhi and the surrounding NCR region. It's easily accessible via major roads like Shershah Road and Dr. Zakir Hussain Marg.

Local Transport

The most convenient way to reach is by the Delhi Metro; the closest station is Central Secretariat. DTC buses, auto-rickshaws, and ride-hailing cabs like Ola and Uber provide easy access from anywhere in the city.
