National Gandhi Museum - A Journey Through Mahatma's Life in Delhi

Following Mahatma Gandhi's assassination in 1948, a concerted effort began to collect and preserve items related to his life. The museum was first established in Mumbai before being moved to various locations in Delhi. In 1957, the collection was shifted to a mansion near Kota House. Finally, the present museum was inaugurated on January 30, 1961, the 13th anniversary of his death, by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the then President of India. Its location was chosen for its proximity to Raj Ghat, the memorial where Gandhi was cremated, making it a part of a larger precinct dedicated to his memory.

The National Gandhi Museum holds immense national significance as a primary repository of Mahatma Gandhi's memory and legacy. It serves as a crucial educational center, preserving and disseminating his philosophy of 'Ahimsa' (non-violence) and 'Satyagraha' (truth-force).
