Overview

The National Railway Museum in Delhi is a captivating open-air and indoor museum that documents the spectacular 160-year history of Indian Railways. Spread over 11 acres, the museum's primary attraction is its vast outdoor yard, where visitors can walk among an impressive collection of real-size locomotives and royal saloons. You can see everything from the majestic Fairy Queen, the world's oldest working steam locomotive, to massive diesel and electric engines. Many of the exhibits are accessible, allowing you to climb into the driver's cabin or peek into the opulent carriages used by maharajas and viceroys.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit is from October to March when the weather in Delhi is pleasant and cool, perfect for exploring the large outdoor display area. Winters (December-February) are particularly comfortable. Avoid the peak summer months of April to June, as the extreme heat can make walking around outdoors very difficult. The monsoon season (July-September) can also be inconvenient due to rain.
Peak Crowd: November to January, weekends, and school holidays, due to pleasant weather and holiday crowds.
Moderate Crowd: February to March and October on weekdays.
Low Crowd: April to September, especially on weekdays, due to extreme heat and monsoon season.

How to Reach

Air

Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL) is the nearest airport, located about 12 km away. It takes approximately 30-40 minutes to reach the museum by taxi or cab.

Train

New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS) is about 8 km away, and Nizamuddin Railway Station (NZM) is around 11 km away. Both are major stations with good connectivity. You can hire a taxi or an auto-rickshaw from the stations.

Road

The museum is located in the well-connected Chanakyapuri area. It is easily accessible by road via Shanti Path. State-run buses, taxis, and auto-rickshaws provide convenient access from any part of Delhi.

Local Transport

The most convenient way is by the Delhi Metro; the nearest station is Sir M. Vishweshwaraiah Moti Bagh on the Pink Line. DTC buses, app-based cabs like Ola and Uber, and auto-rickshaws are widely available.
