National Railway Museum - A Journey Through India's Rail Heritage in Delhi

Established on February 1, 1977, the National Railway Museum was created to preserve and showcase the rich heritage of India's railway system. The concept was developed in 1962, but it took until 1971 for the foundation stone to be laid by President V. V. Giri at its current site in Chanakyapuri. The museum was inaugurated by Kamalapati Tripathi, the then Minister of Railways. It was designed to be more than just a static collection, incorporating a functional railway yard layout to display its prized locomotives and rolling stock in a realistic setting. Over the years, its collection has grown to become the largest of its kind in Asia.

This museum holds immense national significance as the primary custodian of India's railway legacy. It is not just a collection of old trains; it's a narrative of how the railways unified the country, fueled its economy, and became a part of its cultural fabric. The collection includes unique and historically important artifacts like the Fairy Queen locomotive (certified by Guinness World Records) and the Patiala State Monorail Trainways. For visitors, it offers a tangible connection to India's industrial and social history, making it a crucial educational and cultural institution.
