Neela Gumbad - Delhi's Historic Blue Dome Tomb

Built around the 1530s during the early Mughal period, Neela Gumbad is one of the first Mughal structures in Delhi. While its occupant is not definitively known, it is widely believed to be the tomb of Fahim Khan, an attendant of Abdur Rahim Khan-i-Khanan, who served under Emperor Akbar. The tomb predates the main Humayun's Tomb and showcases a distinct architectural style influenced by Central Asian aesthetics. For a long period, the monument was isolated from the Humayun’s Tomb complex by a road. In the 2010s, as part of the Nizamuddin Urban Renewal Initiative, the Aga Khan Trust for Culture undertook significant conservation work, restoring its dome and reconnecting it to the World Heritage site.

Neela Gumbad holds significant architectural importance as a fine example of early Mughal tomb construction. Its brilliant blue-tiled dome is a rare and well-preserved feature in Delhi's architectural landscape, showing strong Timurid and Persian influences. It is also an important precursor to the octagonal tomb design that became a hallmark of later Mughal structures. As part of the buffer zone of the Humayun's Tomb UNESCO World Heritage Site, its conservation and recent reintegration into the main complex highlight successful heritage management and preservation efforts in India, making it a key part of the larger historical narrative of the area.
