Nehru Planetarium - Mumbai's Gateway to the Cosmos

Established on March 3, 1977, the Nehru Planetarium was built as a part of the Nehru Centre, a memorial dedicated to India's first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Inaugurated by Smt. Indira Gandhi, its primary purpose was to promote science, astronomy, and a scientific outlook among the public, especially young people. The planetarium was designed by the renowned Indian architect J.M. Kadri. Since its inception, it has been a key institution for astronomical education in India, continuously updating its technology and shows to reflect new discoveries in space exploration and science. It remains an important cultural and educational landmark in the city.

The Nehru Planetarium holds great significance as a center for informal science education in India. For decades, it has been instrumental in making astronomy accessible and exciting for the general public, particularly students. Its 360-degree dome theatre offers an immersive learning experience that is unique in the city. The institution also plays a vital role in the scientific community by hosting lectures, workshops, and observation events for celestial occurrences like eclipses and meteor showers. Architecturally, its dome structure is a well-known feature of Mumbai's skyline, symbolizing the city's connection to modern science and knowledge.
