Overview

Nehru Zoological Park, commonly known as the Hyderabad Zoo, is a large wildlife park spread over approximately 380 acres. Located near the Mir Alam Tank, the zoo is designed to house animals in enclosures that closely resemble their natural habitats, separated from visitors by wide moats. This layout gives you a more immersive experience compared to traditional caged zoos. The park is home to a wide variety of animals, birds, and reptiles, including the Indian rhino, Asiatic lion, Bengal tiger, panther, and several species of deer and monkeys.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is from October to February when the weather in Hyderabad is cool and pleasant, making it comfortable to walk around the large park. The animals are also more active during these months. The summer months, from March to June, can be extremely hot. The monsoon season, from July to September, offers a lush green environment, but sudden rains can disrupt your visit. Winter mornings are particularly good for seeing animals out in the open.
Peak Crowd: Weekends (Saturdays and Sundays), public holidays, and during school vacations in October, December, and January.
Moderate Crowd: Weekdays during the winter season (November to February).
Low Crowd: Weekday mornings during the summer and monsoon seasons (April to September).

How to Reach

Air

Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (HYD) is about 20 km away. You can hire a pre-paid taxi or a cab service like Ola/Uber for a 30-40 minute drive to the zoo.

Train

The nearest major railway stations are Hyderabad Deccan (Nampally) at 6 km and Secunderabad Junction at 12 km. From either station, you can take a taxi, auto-rickshaw, or a local bus to reach the park.

Road

The zoo is located on National Highway 44 and is easily accessible by road from all parts of Hyderabad and surrounding areas. The Mahatma Gandhi Bus Station (MGBS) is about 6 km away.

Local Transport

TSRTC city buses have frequent services to the zoo from various points in the city. Auto-rickshaws and app-based cab services like Ola and Uber are widely available for convenient travel.
