Neyyar Dam - A Nature & Wildlife Hub near Kovalam

Neyyar Dam is a large gravity dam built on the Neyyar River, set against the southern low hills of the Western Ghats. The area around the dam has been developed into a popular destination for locals and tourists. The main draw is the large reservoir, where you can take speed boat or safari boat rides to get a better view of the surrounding forests. The dam itself offers a wide walkway on top, providing an expansive view of the lake on one side and the downstream channel on the other. The complex isn't just about the dam. It includes the Neyyar Wildlife Sanctuary, which is home to a variety of animals. Key attractions within this sanctuary that you can visit are a Lion Safari Park located on an island in the reservoir, a Deer Park, and a Crocodile Rehabilitation and Research Centre. The atmosphere is generally relaxed, especially on weekdays, making it a good spot for a day trip away from the city. The entire area is quite spread out, so be prepared for some walking between the different points of interest.
