    About the Destination

    Overview

Niagara Falls consists of three waterfalls—the Horseshoe Falls, American Falls, and Bridal Veil Falls—spanning the border between Ontario, Canada, and New York, United States. The site features a combined flow rate of over 85,000 cubic feet per second, making it one of the most powerful waterfall systems in North America. Visitors experience the immense scale of the falls through various viewpoints, boat tours like the Maid of the Mist, and walking paths such as the Cave of the Winds which bring you within feet of the crashing water. The surrounding area includes state parks on both sides. The New York side centers around Niagara Falls State Park, offering walking trails, observation decks at Prospect Point, and access to Goat Island. The Canadian side provides a broader panoramic view of all three falls from Queen Victoria Park. Attractions around the falls include historical exhibits, nature centers, and hydropower monuments. Visitors typically walk along the paved promenades to observe the river rapids before the drop and the gorge below.

    Visitor Tips

    • • Visit the observation decks early morning between 8-10 AM to avoid the heaviest pedestrian traffic
    • • Carry a waterproof phone pouch or camera cover, as the mist will soak your electronics near the falls
    • • Wear quick-drying clothes and sandals if you plan to do the Cave of the Winds or Maid of the Mist tours
    • • Cross the Rainbow Bridge on foot to see both the US and Canadian sides (valid passport and visa required)
    • • Check the seasonal schedule for the nightly illumination and summer fireworks over the falls
    • • Purchase a multi-attraction pass if you plan to visit three or more ticketed sites to save money
    • • Prepare for strong winds and dropping temperatures near the water, even during the summer months

    Rules & Restrictions

    • • Valid passport and appropriate visas required to cross the international border between the US and Canada
    • • No drones or unauthorized aerial vehicles allowed in the airspace above the falls
    • • No swimming or wading in the Niagara River above or below the falls
    • • Stay on marked paths; climbing over stone walls and protective railings is strictly prohibited
    • • Pets must be kept on a leash no longer than 6 feet in the state park

    Safety Information

    • • Keep electronics in waterproof bags, as the mist from the falls extends far onto the viewing decks
    • • Stay strictly on marked pathways and behind safety railings; the river currents are dangerously fast
    • • Surfaces near the falls and on attraction walkways are constantly wet and can be very slippery; walk with caution
    • • Keep a close eye on children, especially near the gorge rim and in crowded observation areas
    • • During winter visits, watch out for black ice on the walkways and wear proper insulated, grip-soled footwear
    • • Carry your passport securely if you plan to walk across the international border

    Best Time to Visit

    • Mid-May to mid-September is the most popular time to visit when all attractions, including the boat tours, are fully operational and temperatures range from 15-25°C. The summer months bring high crowd levels. October offers autumn foliage with moderate crowds. Winter (December to March) brings freezing temperatures and ice formations; while the boat tours close, the partially frozen falls create a unique visual experience with far fewer tourists.
    • Peak Crowd: June to August, and holiday weekends, due to warm weather and school vacations
    • Moderate Crowd: May, September, and October during the shoulder seasons with cooler weather
    • Low Crowd: November to March when freezing temperatures cause outdoor boat tours to close

    Your Questions, Answered

The viewing areas and state parks on both sides are open 24/7 all year round. Ticketed attractions generally run from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with extended hours in summer.
You do not need a passport to view the falls from within your own country (US or Canada). However, if you wish to cross the Rainbow Bridge to view the falls from the opposite side, a valid passport and appropriate visa are required.
Visit on weekday mornings before 10 AM during the shoulder seasons of May or September. Winter months have the lowest crowds but outdoor boat tours are closed.
No, the Maid of the Mist and Hornblower boat tours operate seasonally, typically from May through early November, depending on ice conditions in the river.
Wear comfortable walking shoes with good traction. If doing the boat tours or Cave of the Winds, expect to get wet; wear quick-drying clothes. Provided ponchos keep your torso dry but your shoes and legs will likely get damp.
