Nileshwar, often called the cultural capital of Kasargod district, is a quiet town defined by the Tejaswini River and its network of backwaters. The main experience here revolves around the calm waterways that connect to the expansive Valiyaparamba backwaters. Unlike the busier backwaters of southern Kerala, Nileshwar provides a more laid-back and personal feel. Visitors can hire traditional houseboats, known as Kettuvallams, for overnight stays or day cruises.
