    About the Destination

    Overview

Nohkalikai Waterfalls is the tallest plunge waterfall in India, dropping from a height of about 340 meters (1,115 feet) into a deep green pool below. Located near Cherrapunji, one of the wettest places on Earth, the waterfall is fed by rainwater collected on the summit of a small plateau. The experience for visitors is primarily centered around a main viewpoint that offers a direct, panoramic view of the falls cascading down a sheer cliff. The surrounding cliffs are covered in lush greenery, and the area is often shrouded in mist, which adds to the atmosphere. A series of steep, concrete steps lead down towards the base, offering different perspectives along the way. The full trek to the bottom is strenuous and recommended only for those with good physical fitness. At the viewpoint area, there are several small stalls selling local snacks and souvenirs. The sound of the water and the immense scale of the cliff face make for a powerful natural spectacle, especially during and after the monsoon season when the water flow is at its peak.

    Best Time to Visit

    • The ideal time to visit is from September to February. During these post-monsoon and winter months, the waterfall has a healthy flow, and the skies are generally clearer, offering unobstructed views. The weather is cool and pleasant. The monsoon season (June to August) sees the falls in its most powerful form, but heavy rains and dense fog can often completely hide the view. Summer (March to May) is warmer, and the water volume might be reduced, though it's still a substantial flow.
    • Peak Crowd: October-January, especially during weekends and the Durga Puja and Christmas holidays.
    • Moderate Crowd: February-May on weekdays.
    • Low Crowd: June-September, due to heavy monsoons and foggy conditions obscuring the view.
