Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Church - Panjim's Iconic White Landmark

The church's history began in 1541 as a modest chapel built for Portuguese sailors arriving in Goa. At the time, Panjim was a simple port, and this chapel was often the first stop for sailors to give thanks for a safe voyage. As the importance of Panjim grew, the original chapel was replaced by the current, much larger church structure in 1619. The elaborate zig-zag stairways were added later, in 1871. Its historic bell, which was salvaged from the ruins of the Church of St. Augustine in Old Goa, was installed in 1871. The church has remained an active religious center and a prominent architectural landmark in Goa's capital city ever since.
