Overview

The Outer Circle Walk is an 11-kilometer paved road that loops around the main meadow of Gulmarg, providing a wonderful way to experience the area's natural landscape. The walk follows a gentle, undulating path through thick forests of pine and deodar trees. As you move along the trail, you get constantly changing perspectives of the Gulmarg valley, the golf course, and the charming local huts.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to experience the walk is during the summer and autumn months, from May to October. During this period, the weather is pleasant, the path is clear of snow, and the meadows are lush green. September and October offer particularly clear skies, providing the best chances for unobscured views of distant peaks like Nanga Parbat. The walk is generally inaccessible due to heavy snow from late December to February.
Peak Crowd: May-June (summer holidays) and December-January (peak snow season for general tourism), especially on weekends.
Moderate Crowd: March-April and September-October, on weekdays.
Low Crowd: July-August (monsoon season) and on weekdays in shoulder seasons.

How to Reach

Air

Srinagar International Airport (SXR) is the nearest airport, located about 56 km from Gulmarg. From the airport, you can hire a pre-paid taxi for a 2-3 hour drive to Gulmarg.

Train

The closest major railway station is Jammu Tawi (JAT), around 290 km away. From Jammu, you can take a bus or taxi to Srinagar, and then another taxi from Srinagar to Gulmarg.

Road

Gulmarg has good road connectivity with Srinagar. The scenic drive takes about 2-3 hours. JKSRTC buses, shared jeeps, and private taxis regularly ply the route from Srinagar to Gulmarg.

Local Transport

Once in Gulmarg, the starting point of the Outer Circle Walk is easily reached on foot from most hotels. You can also hire ponies or rent bicycles from the main market area to traverse the path.
