Overa-Aru Wildlife Sanctuary - A Himalayan Biodiversity Hotspot in Pahalgam

The Overa-Aru Wildlife Sanctuary was officially established to conserve the unique flora and fauna of the region. It was declared a sanctuary in 1981, initially covering an area of 32 square kilometers. Later, in 1987, it was expanded to its current size of approximately 425 square kilometers, connecting it with the Dachigam National Park through a forest corridor. Its primary purpose has always been the protection of the Himalayan habitat, with special focus on the conservation of the Hangul and other threatened species. The sanctuary is managed by the Jammu and Kashmir Department of Wildlife Protection, which oversees conservation efforts and regulates tourism activities to minimize environmental impact.

The sanctuary's main significance lies in its role as a critical habitat for the Kashmir Stag (Hangul), a species found only in this region. It is a key area for biodiversity conservation in the Himalayas, protecting numerous species of mammals, birds, and plants.
