Pallipuram Fort - India's Oldest European Fort near Kochi

Built by Portuguese explorers in 1503, Pallipuram Fort, also known as Ayikotta, is the oldest existing European fort in India. Its original purpose was to defend their territories and trade routes. In 1661, the Dutch captured the fort from the Portuguese and made additions to strengthen it. Later, in 1789, the fort was sold to the Kingdom of Travancore. Today, it stands as a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), a quiet witness to centuries of colonial history on the Malabar Coast.

The primary significance of Pallipuram Fort lies in its age; it is recognized as the oldest surviving European-built fort in India. Architecturally, its hexagonal layout is quite unique for its time.
