Overview

Pallipuram Fort is a small but historically important structure located on Vypin Island. Believed to be the oldest existing European fort in India, it was constructed by the Portuguese in 1503. The fort has a distinct hexagonal shape and is built using laterite, lime, and wood. Inside, the space is open with a cellar, and the walls are thick, featuring openings for guns and cannons. The fort's location was strategic, built to guard the entrance to the backwaters and control sea trade.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit is from October to March. During these months, the weather in Kerala is dry and pleasant, with comfortable temperatures perfect for sightseeing. The summer months from April to May can be very hot and humid. The monsoon season, from June to September, brings heavy rainfall which might disrupt travel plans, although the surroundings become very green and beautiful.
Peak Crowd: December-January, weekends, and public holidays, aligning with peak tourist season and local visitors heading to nearby beaches.
Moderate Crowd: October-November and February-March on weekdays.
Low Crowd: April-September due to summer heat and monsoons. The fort is generally not a very crowded attraction.

How to Reach

Air

Cochin International Airport (COK) is the nearest airport, located about 28 km away. From the airport, it takes approximately 1 hour to reach the fort by taxi.

Train

The nearest major railway stations are Ernakulam Junction (South) and Ernakulam Town (North) in Kochi, both around 30 km away. You can hire a taxi or take a bus from the station.

Road

The fort is on Vypin Island, which is well-connected by road to Kochi city via a series of bridges (Goshree bridges). It is located just off the main road leading to Munambam.

Local Transport

Auto-rickshaws are readily available for local travel on Vypin Island. Local buses also ply the route from Vypin ferry terminal to Cherai and Munambam. Taxis and app-based cab services are also an option.
