Panchalimedu is a scenic viewpoint situated at an altitude of about 2,500 feet above sea level in the Idukki district. The place is known for its refreshing climate, strong winds, and wide-ranging views of the surrounding hills and valleys. The main experience involves a short trek up a grassy hill to reach the summit. From the top, you can see a 360-degree panorama of the landscape, which is particularly beautiful during sunrise and sunset. On clear days, distant towns and the Makarajyothi at Sabarimala can be spotted.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Panchalimedu is from September to March. During these months, the weather is pleasant, and the skies are generally clear, offering the best views. The monsoon season, from June to August, should be avoided as heavy rains make the paths slippery and the hills are often covered in thick fog, obscuring any views. The post-monsoon period from September to November is especially beautiful, with lush green landscapes.

Air

Cochin International Airport (COK) is the nearest airport, located about 125 km away. From the airport, you can hire a taxi which takes around 3.5-4 hours to reach Panchalimedu.

Train

The nearest major railway station is Kottayam (KTYM), approximately 75 km away. From the station, taxis and buses are available towards Kuttikkanam or Kumily.

Road

Panchalimedu is located just off the Kottayam-Kumily highway (NH 183). It is about 40 km from Thekkady/Kumily and 5 km from Kuttikkanam. Regular buses connect major cities to Kuttikkanam and Kumily.

Local Transport

Hiring a private taxi or jeep from Thekkady or Kuttikkanam is the most convenient way to reach. Local auto-rickshaws are also available from nearby junctions like Murinjapuzha for the final stretch to the base of the hill.
