Pathar Masjid - The Unique Stone Mosque of Srinagar

Pathar Masjid, or the Stone Mosque, was built in 1623 by the Mughal Empress Nur Jahan, the wife of Emperor Jahangir. The construction was overseen by the Mughal historian and architect, Malik Hyder Chaudhura. Upon its completion, a controversy arose when local religious leaders reportedly deemed the mosque unsuitable for prayer, possibly due to its deviation from traditional Kashmiri mosque design. Because of this, it never achieved the status of a major congregational mosque like the Jamia Masjid. For centuries, it has been maintained more as a historical monument than an active religious center. It is now a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Pathar Masjid is architecturally significant as it is the largest surviving Mughal-era mosque in Kashmir. Its design is a distinct departure from the indigenous wooden and pagoda-style architecture prevalent in the region, showcasing a pure, imperial Mughal style using stone. This makes it an important example of cultural and architectural fusion, or imposition, during that period. Its association with the powerful Empress Nur Jahan adds to its historical importance. The mosque serves as a key historical landmark that tells a story of Mughal influence, local identity, and architectural evolution in the Kashmir Valley.
