Pathiramanal Island - Bird Sanctuary in Alleppey Backwaters

Originally a private property owned by the Thaimattathil family, the island was purchased by the government of Kerala in the late 1970s. For years, it remained a largely untouched piece of land in the backwaters. Over time, its ecological importance as a natural habitat for hundreds of bird species became recognized. The Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC) later began promoting it as a destination for birdwatchers and nature enthusiasts visiting the Alappuzha backwaters. It is now a protected area and a key stop for tourists exploring Vembanad Lake.

Pathiramanal's significance is purely ecological. It is a vital bird sanctuary, providing a safe roosting and breeding ground for many resident birds and a crucial resting point for migratory birds that fly thousands of kilometers. For the Vembanad Lake ecosystem, the island is an important pocket of biodiversity. For visitors, it offers a focused nature experience away from the more common houseboat cruises, allowing for close observation of avian life in its natural setting. Its protected status helps in the conservation of local and migratory bird species.
