Overview

Pathiramanal is a small, uninhabited island located in the middle of Vembanad Lake in Kerala. The name translates to 'sands of night'. Accessible only by boat, a trip here is as much about the journey across the backwaters as it is about the destination. Once you arrive at the simple jetty, you step into a dense world of tropical plants and trees, crisscrossed by narrow, unpaved walking paths.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit Pathiramanal is from November to March. During these months, the weather is pleasant and dry, making the boat ride and walk comfortable. This period also coincides with the migratory season, offering the best chances to see a wide variety of birds. The summer months of April and May can be very hot and humid. The monsoon season, from June to September, brings heavy rainfall which can disrupt boat services and make the island paths slippery and difficult to navigate.
Peak Crowd: December to January, long weekends, and festival holidays when Kerala tourism is at its peak.
Moderate Crowd: October, November, February, and March on weekdays.
Low Crowd: April to September, due to the extreme heat of summer and heavy monsoon rains.

Air

Cochin International Airport (COK) is the nearest airport, located about 75 km away from Muhamma jetty. A taxi from the airport takes around 2 hours.

Train

Alappuzha Railway Station (ALLP) is the closest major station, about 16 km away. From the station, you can hire a taxi or an auto-rickshaw to reach a jetty.

Road

Alleppey is well-connected by road via NH 66. You can drive to Muhamma or Kayippuram jetties. KSRTC and private buses frequently run to Alleppey from major cities like Kochi and Trivandrum.

Local Transport

The final leg of the journey is by water. You can hire a motorboat or speedboat from Muhamma, Kayippuram, or Kumarakom jetties. Some houseboat packages also include a stop at Pathiramanal.
