Peechi Dam - A Scenic Reservoir and Picnic Spot in Thrissur

The construction of Peechi Dam began in 1947, shortly after India's independence, as part of the country's push for agricultural self-sufficiency. It was one of the earliest irrigation projects in Kerala. The primary purpose was to create a reliable water source for the Kole lands of Thrissur, a unique wetland paddy cultivation system. The dam was completed and officially commissioned in 1957. Over the years, its recreational potential was recognized, and gardens and boating facilities were added to develop it into the tourist destination it is today, managed by the Kerala Irrigation Department.

Peechi Dam holds significant importance both as an engineering marvel and a natural retreat. Its primary significance lies in its role in agriculture, ensuring water supply for the cultivation of paddy in the vast Kole wetlands. It is also a major source of drinking water for the entire Thrissur corporation area. For visitors, its significance is as a major recreational hub that offers a peaceful escape from the city. The dam and its reservoir form a crucial part of the ecosystem of the adjoining Peechi-Vazhani Wildlife Sanctuary, supporting local flora and fauna.
