Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is from October to May when the weather is pleasant and dry, making it ideal for walking around. The monsoon season, from June to September, sees heavy rainfall which can disrupt plans. December is particularly festive with Christmas decorations, but also brings in large crowds. For a good balance of pleasant weather and moderate crowds, consider visiting between February and April.

Moderate Crowd: February-May on weekday afternoons.
Low Crowd: Weekday mornings (10 AM - 12 PM) and during the heavy monsoon months of July and August.

How to Reach

Air

The nearest airport is Shillong Airport (SHL) in Umroi, about 30 km away (1-1.5 hours by car). A more connected option is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (GAU) in Guwahati, 100 km away (3-4 hours by taxi).

Train

Guwahati Railway Station (GHY) is the nearest major railhead, located about 100 km from Shillong. From the station, you can hire private or shared taxis to reach Police Bazaar.

Road

Shillong is well-connected by NH6 from Guwahati. Regular buses and shared taxis ply this route. Police Bazaar itself is the main drop-off point for most vehicles entering Shillong.

Local Transport

Police Bazaar is the city's transport nerve center. Local taxis are the primary mode of transport within Shillong and can be hailed from anywhere in the area. The market itself is best explored on foot.
