Pookode Lake - Wayanad's Natural Freshwater Lake

Pookode Lake is a natural, perennial freshwater body, believed to be one of the oldest in the region. Its transformation into a structured tourist destination is a more recent development, undertaken by the Wayanad District Tourism Promotion Council (DTPC). The goal was to preserve the lake's delicate ecosystem while making it accessible to visitors. Infrastructure such as the walking path, boating facilities, children's park, and the aquarium were added over the years to enhance the visitor experience and establish it as a key attraction in Wayanad.

The lake is ecologically important as it is the origin of the Panamaram river, a major tributary of the Kabini River. It is also significant for its unique biodiversity, including the Pethia pookodensis, a species of cyprinid fish that is said to be found only here. The lake's distinctive shape, resembling the map of India, adds to its geographical uniqueness. For visitors, it's one of Wayanad's most popular and easily accessible natural attractions, offering recreational activities in a clean, green environment.
