    About the Destination

    Overview

Poonch is a historic town set in a valley of the Pir Panjal range, known for its strategic location and rich past. Although listed as 'around Patnitop', it is a significant destination in itself, located about 180 kilometers away, requiring a full day of travel through mountainous terrain. The town's main landmark is the Poonch Fort, a large structure showcasing a mix of Mughal and Dogra architectural styles, although parts of it are used for administrative offices. Visitors will experience a town with a strong military presence due to its proximity to the Line of Control. The landscape is defined by the Poonch River, surrounding green hills, and traditional wooden homes. The atmosphere is that of an off-the-beaten-path border town, offering a look into a unique cultural blend of Pahari, Gujjar, and Kashmiri influences. A visit here is less about tourist amenities and more about exploring a region with deep historical roots and rugged natural surroundings.
