Powai Lake - Mumbai's Urban Lakeside Escape

Powai Lake was created by the British in 1891 by constructing two dams across the Mithi River. The project cost around ₹6,50,000 at the time and was conceived to augment the water supply for the city of Bombay. For several years, it served this purpose. However, due to increasing pollution from nearby residential and industrial areas, the water was declared unfit for drinking. Over the years, the lake has faced challenges with water quality and weed infestation. In recent times, efforts have been made to clean and rejuvenate the lake, and the surrounding area has been developed with a promenade to make it a public recreational space.

Powai Lake is significant as a recreational and ecological spot in a densely populated urban environment. It provides a much-needed open space for residents of Powai and nearby areas to connect with nature. Its ecosystem supports various bird species and a resident population of Marsh Crocodiles, making it an important urban wildlife habitat. The lake and its promenade are deeply integrated into the local lifestyle, serving as a hub for fitness enthusiasts and families. It is also an iconic landmark associated with the prestigious IIT Bombay, whose campus borders the lake.
