    About the Destination

    Overview

River rafting in Manali takes place on the Beas River, offering a thrilling experience through the scenic Kullu Valley. The activity is primarily concentrated on a stretch starting from Pirdi, about 45 km south of Manali, and extending downstream. The river features a mix of Grade II and III rapids, making it suitable for both beginners and those with some experience. A typical rafting trip begins with a detailed safety briefing from certified guides, who provide helmets, life jackets, and paddles. Participants then board an inflatable raft and navigate the river's currents, paddling in coordination with the guide's commands. The journey down the Beas is as much about the views as it is about the adventure. As you tackle rapids with names like 'Bubble Bath' and 'Wake Up Call', you are surrounded by lush green hills, dense pine forests, and distant snow-capped peaks of the Himalayas. The entire experience, from the initial briefing to the final pull-out, is managed by numerous private operators located along the Kullu-Manali highway. The water is cold year-round, adding to the exhilarating feel of the splashes during the ride.

    Visitor Tips

    • • Go for rafting in the morning (9 AM - 12 PM) when the water flow is generally stable and the sun is not too harsh.
    • • Book through government-authorized and reputable operators to ensure safety standards and proper equipment.
    • • Wear quick-drying synthetic clothes (T-shirt, shorts) and avoid cotton, which becomes heavy and cold when wet.
    • • Secure your footwear; river sandals or floaters are ideal. Avoid slippers that can easily come off.
    • • Listen carefully to all instructions from your guide, both during the safety briefing and on the water.
    • • Leave valuables like mobile phones, wallets, and jewelry at the operator's office or in your vehicle. They often provide lockers.
    • • Apply waterproof sunscreen, as the sun's reflection off the water can cause severe sunburn.
    • • If you wear glasses, secure them with a strap.

    Rules & Restrictions

    • • Minimum age is typically 14 years, though it can vary by operator.
    • • A general weight limit of around 90-100 kg per person may be enforced.
    • • Individuals with heart conditions, epilepsy, or other serious medical issues are advised not to participate.
    • • Consumption of alcohol or any intoxicants before or during the activity is strictly prohibited.
    • • Pregnant women are not allowed to participate.
    • • Participants must wear the provided life jacket and helmet at all times on the water.

    Safety Information

    • • Always choose a rafting operator registered with the Himachal Pradesh Tourism Department.
    • • Ensure your life jacket fits snugly and your helmet is properly fastened before entering the water.
    • • Pay close attention to the guide's commands, such as 'paddle forward', 'stop', and 'get down'.
    • • Never stand up in the raft while it is moving through rapids.
    • • If you fall into the water, float on your back with your feet pointed downstream to fend off rocks.
    • • Do not consume alcohol before the activity.
    • • Inform your guide about any medical conditions you may have.

    Best Time to Visit

    • The best time for river rafting in Manali is from late April to early July and again from late September to November. During these periods, the weather is pleasant, and the water levels in the Beas River are ideal for rafting. The activity is suspended during the monsoon season (mid-July to mid-September) due to dangerously high water levels and strong currents. It is also closed during the peak winter months (December to March) because of the extreme cold and low water flow.
    • Peak Crowd: May-June (summer vacation season) and October (post-monsoon holidays). Weekends are especially busy.
    • Moderate Crowd: April, late September, and November. Weekdays see fewer crowds.
    • Low Crowd: The activity is closed from mid-July to mid-September (monsoon) and December to March (winter).
