Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica - Historic Church in Kochi

The history of the Santa Cruz Basilica begins with the Portuguese, who built the original church in 1505. In 1558, Pope Paul IV elevated it to the status of a Cathedral. When the Dutch conquered Kochi in 1663, they destroyed many Catholic buildings, but this cathedral was spared and used as an armoury. Later, the British demolished the structure. The current building was commissioned in 1887 and consecrated as a church in 1905. Recognizing its historical and religious importance, Pope John Paul II declared it a Basilica in 1984, making it one of the eight Basilicas in India.

The Santa Cruz Basilica holds immense significance for its deep historical roots, being one of the oldest churches in India. Its architectural value is notable, showcasing a grand Indo-European Gothic style that makes it a distinct landmark in Fort Kochi. As one of only eight Basilicas in the country, it is a major pilgrimage center for the Christian community. The interior artwork, particularly the ceiling paintings by Fra Antonio Moscheni, adds to its cultural and artistic importance, making it a key site for those interested in history, art, and religion.
