Seven Sister Falls, officially known as Nohsngithiang Falls, is a magnificent seven-segmented waterfall located near the Mawsmai village in Cherrapunji. It's a seasonal fall that comes to life during the monsoon, when seven separate streams plunge over the limestone cliffs of the Khasi Hills, creating a breathtaking spectacle. The falls have an estimated drop of about 315 meters (1,033 feet), making it one of the tallest waterfalls in India. Visitors experience the view from a designated viewpoint across the gorge, which offers a wide, panoramic perspective.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Seven Sister Falls is during the peak monsoon season, from June to September. This is when the waterfalls are fed by heavy rains and flow with incredible force, creating the magnificent seven-stream view it is famous for. The surrounding landscape is also at its greenest. Post-monsoon, from October to November, offers a good balance of considerable water flow and clearer skies. Avoid visiting from December to March, as the water volume decreases drastically, sometimes drying up completely.
Peak Crowd: June-October, especially on weekends and national holidays, as this is the prime monsoon season.
Moderate Crowd: March-May and November, during the shoulder seasons when the weather is pleasant but the falls are not at their peak.
Low Crowd: December-February, due to the minimal water flow in the falls during the dry winter months.

How to Reach

Air

The nearest major airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), about 170 km away (4-5 hours by taxi). Shillong Airport (SHL) is closer at 80 km, but has limited flight connectivity.

Train

Guwahati Railway Station (GHY) is the nearest major railhead, approximately 150 km from Cherrapunji. You can hire a taxi from the station for the 4-5 hour journey.

Road

Cherrapunji is well-connected by road from Shillong (55 km, ~2 hours) and Guwahati (150 km, ~4-5 hours). Taxis are readily available from both cities. Meghalaya Transport Corporation (MTC) buses also run from Shillong.

Local Transport

To reach the falls from Cherrapunji town, it is best to hire a local taxi. They offer point-to-point services or full-day packages covering multiple attractions in the area.
