Overview

Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected forest area located in the Kollam district of Kerala, forming a part of the larger Agasthyamalai Biosphere Reserve. Established in 1984, the sanctuary surrounds the reservoir of the Thenmala Dam, also known as the Parappar Dam. The landscape is a mix of tropical evergreen and semi-evergreen forests, with varied terrain that includes hills and valleys. The sanctuary is named after an endemic and endangered tree species, Gluta travancorica, locally called 'Chenkurinji'.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit is from October to February. During these months, the weather is cool and pleasant, making trekking and boating enjoyable. The post-monsoon period leaves the forest lush and green. Wildlife sightings are also more frequent near water bodies. The summer months from March to May can be very hot and humid. The monsoon season, from June to September, sees heavy rainfall, which can make trails slippery and lead to the presence of leeches, though the landscape is at its most vibrant.
Peak Crowd: December-January, weekends, and school vacation periods (April-May) due to holidays and pleasant winter weather.
Moderate Crowd: October-November and February-March, on weekdays.
Low Crowd: June-September during the heavy monsoon season and on weekdays in the hot summer months.

The sanctuary is well-connected by road via Thenmala. It is located about 66 km from Kollam city and 72 km from Thiruvananthapuram. Regular state-run and private buses are available to Thenmala from these cities.

From Thenmala town, auto-rickshaws and local taxis are available to reach the sanctuary's various entry points and the information center. Within the eco-tourism zone, there are designated vehicles for some activities.
