Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary - A Natural Retreat in Kollam

The Shendurney Wildlife Sanctuary was established on August 25, 1984. It is the only wildlife sanctuary in the Kollam district and was created to protect the unique biodiversity of the Agasthyamalai region. Its name is derived from the endemic Chenkurinji tree (*Gluta travancorica*). The sanctuary's core area includes the catchment of the Parappar Dam. From its inception, it has been managed by the Kerala Forests and Wildlife Department, with a focus on conservation and, more recently, the development of structured eco-tourism programs in collaboration with the Thenmala Ecotourism Promotion Society.

The sanctuary's primary significance lies in its ecological value as a vital part of the Western Ghats, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It protects a rich and diverse gene pool, including the endangered Myristica swamps and the rare Chenkurinji tree, which is largely confined to this region. It serves as an important watershed for the Kallada River, supporting the Thenmala Dam and reservoir. For visitors, it's a key destination for regulated eco-tourism, promoting conservation awareness through activities like trekking and nature camps without disturbing the fragile ecosystem.
