    About the Destination

    Overview

Shillong Peak stands as the highest point in Meghalaya, at an elevation of about 1,965 meters above sea level. Located within an Indian Air Force station, the viewpoint provides a stunning 360-degree panoramic view of Shillong city, the rolling Khasi hills, and distant waterfalls. On a clear day, you can even see the plains of Bangladesh stretching out towards the horizon. Visitors access the peak via a narrow, winding road that passes through the Air Force base, which requires a valid photo ID for entry. At the summit, there's a circular viewing platform equipped with telescopes that allow for a closer look at the city below. The atmosphere is generally cool and windy, offering a refreshing break from the city. The area around the viewpoint has small stalls selling local snacks like roasted corn and tea, making it a popular spot for both tourists and locals to relax and enjoy the scenery.

    Visitor Tips

    • • Visit in the afternoon between 3:00 PM and 4:00 PM for golden hour light and potential sunset views, but mornings offer clearer, fog-free vistas.
    • • The spot is less crowded on weekday mornings. Avoid weekends and public holidays if you prefer a quieter experience.
    • • Carry a valid government-issued photo ID (like Aadhaar, Passport, or Voter ID) as it is mandatory for entry into the Air Force base.
    • • It's always windy and cooler at the peak. Carry a light jacket or shawl, even during summer.
    • • For the best photos, use a zoom lens to capture details of the city below. A wide-angle lens is great for the panoramic landscape.
    • • Check the weather forecast before you go. The view is completely obscured during heavy fog or rain, which is common.
    • • Combine your trip with a visit to Elephant Falls, which is located on the same route, about 5 km away.
    • • Binoculars are available for rent at a nominal charge for a better viewing experience.

    Best Time to Visit

    • The best months to visit Shillong Peak are from October to April. During this post-monsoon and winter period, the sky is generally clear, offering excellent visibility for long-distance views. The weather is pleasant and cool. The monsoon season, from June to September, should be avoided as heavy fog and rain often completely obstruct the panoramic views, making the trip less worthwhile. Spring (March-April) is also a good time with blooming flora in the surrounding hills.
    • Peak Crowd: October-December and April-May, especially on weekends and public holidays, due to pleasant weather and tourist season.
    • Moderate Crowd: January-March and during weekdays in the peak season.
    • Low Crowd: June-September, during the monsoon season, because of poor visibility and frequent rain.
