Overview

Shilpgram is a rural arts and crafts complex located a few kilometers from the main city of Udaipur. Spread across 70 acres of land, it's designed to showcase the traditional lifestyle, arts, and crafts of western India. The complex features replicas of traditional huts from Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Goa, built using authentic materials and construction techniques. Inside these huts, you can often see artisans at work, demonstrating skills like pottery, weaving, embroidery, and mirror work. The atmosphere is that of a village fair, with folk musicians and dancers performing at various spots throughout the day, especially in the late afternoon. Visitors can walk through the winding paths, interact directly with the craftspeople, learn about their skills, and purchase authentic handmade products directly from them. The complex also includes an open-air amphitheater with a capacity of around 8,000, which hosts major cultural festivals.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Shilpgram is from October to March when the weather in Udaipur is pleasant and cool, with temperatures between 15°C and 30°C. December is particularly special because of the 10-day Shilpgram Utsav, which features a massive gathering of artisans and performers. Summers, from April to June, are very hot and not ideal for exploring the open-air complex. The monsoon season from July to September is pleasant but outdoor activities might be affected by rain.

Low Crowd: April to September, due to extreme heat and the monsoon season.

Air

Maharana Pratap Airport (UDR), Udaipur is the nearest airport, located about 25 km from Shilpgram. A taxi from the airport takes around 45-60 minutes.

Train

Udaipur City Railway Station is the main railhead, approximately 9 km away. It is well-connected to major Indian cities. Auto-rickshaws and taxis are readily available at the station.

Road

Udaipur is well-connected by road via National Highway 48 and other state highways. Regular government and private buses run from cities like Jaipur, Ahmedabad, and Delhi.

Auto-rickshaws and app-based services like Ola and Uber are the most common ways to get around Udaipur and reach Shilpgram. You can hire one for a round trip from the city center.
