Shivamogga, often called the 'Gateway to Malnad', is a district in Karnataka that represents the heart of the Western Ghats' natural beauty. The landscape is dominated by dense green forests, rolling hills, and numerous rivers and waterfalls. The River Tunga flows through the main city, adding to its scenic appeal. Visitors come here to experience nature in its raw form, from the thunderous Jog Falls, one of India's tallest waterfalls, to the misty, rainforest environment of Agumbe.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is from September to February. During this period, the monsoon has subsided, leaving behind lush green landscapes and waterfalls with ample water. The weather is cool and pleasant, ideal for trekking and sightseeing. For those who want to see the waterfalls at their most powerful, the monsoon months of July and August are the peak time. However, be prepared for heavy rainfall which can disrupt travel plans. Summers, from March to May, are generally hot and humid, making it less comfortable for outdoor activities.
Peak Crowd: October-January, and long weekends, especially around Independence Day (August) and Diwali. This is due to holidays and pleasant post-monsoon weather.
Moderate Crowd: July-September attracts monsoon travelers, while February-March sees moderate family crowds.
Low Crowd: April-June is the low season due to hot and humid weather, and waterfalls have significantly less water flow.

How to Reach

Air

The nearest airport is Shivamogga Airport (RQY), though it has limited flights. Mangalore International Airport (IXE), about 195 km away (4-5 hours by taxi), offers better connectivity.

Train

Shivamogga Town Railway Station (SME) is connected by regular trains from Bengaluru and Mysuru. Taxis and auto-rickshaws are readily available outside the station.

Road

Shivamogga is well-connected by National Highways NH 69 and NH 169. It is around 300 km from Bengaluru (a 5-6 hour drive). KSRTC and private buses operate frequently from Bengaluru, Mangaluru, and other major Karnataka cities.

Local Transport

Auto-rickshaws are common for travel within Shimoga city. To explore the district's widespread attractions, hiring a private car or taxi for the day is the most efficient method. Local buses connect major towns but are not ideal for covering multiple tourist spots in a day.
