Sinthan Top - A Scenic High-Altitude Pass Near Pahalgam

Historically, the route over Sinthan Top was used by local shepherds and nomadic communities like the Gujjars and Bakarwals for seasonal migration with their livestock. The modern motorable road, National Highway 244, is a relatively recent development, constructed and maintained by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO). It was built to create an alternative and shorter link between the Kashmir Valley and the remote Kishtwar region of the Chenab Valley. The opening of the road in the mid-2000s made the pass accessible to tourists and has been instrumental in promoting tourism in this less-explored part of Jammu and Kashmir.

Strategically, it provides crucial all-weather connectivity (except during heavy winter closure) between Anantnag and Kishtwar, reducing travel time significantly.
