Sinthan Top is a high-altitude mountain pass located on the National Highway 244, which connects the Kashmir valley with the Kishtwar district. Situated at an elevation of approximately 3,800 meters (12,500 feet), the pass offers expansive 360-degree views of the surrounding snow-covered peaks of the Pir Panjal range. The journey to the top is an experience in itself, with a winding road that climbs through dense pine forests and open meadows, revealing new landscapes at every turn.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit Sinthan Top is from late May to September. During these months, the road is open and the weather is most favorable for travel. In June and July, you can enjoy a mix of green meadows and accessible snowfields. August sees the landscape at its greenest. By September, the weather starts getting colder again, but the skies are often very clear. The pass remains closed for traffic from around November to April due to heavy snowfall, making it inaccessible.
Peak Crowd: June to August, particularly on weekends and local holidays when families from nearby towns visit.
Moderate Crowd: May and September, during the shoulder season.
Low Crowd: Weekdays throughout the open season. The pass is generally much less crowded than other Kashmiri destinations.

How to Reach

Air

The nearest airport is Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport (SXR) in Srinagar, approximately 135 km away. From the airport, you can hire a taxi for the 4-5 hour drive to Sinthan Top via Anantnag and Kokernag.

Train

The closest railway station with national connectivity is Jammu Tawi (JAT), about 240 km away. A more convenient option is to take a train to Banihal or Qazigund station in the valley and then hire a taxi, which is a 3-4 hour drive from there.

Road

Sinthan Top is situated on NH 244. The most common approach is from Srinagar (135 km) via Anantnag and Kokernag. The road from Kokernag to the top is steep and winding. It can also be reached from Pahalgam (approx. 90 km), though the route via Kokernag is more standard.

Local Transport

Hiring a private taxi or cab is the most reliable way to visit Sinthan Top. You can book one from Srinagar, Anantnag or Pahalgam for a day trip. Ensure the driver has experience navigating high-altitude passes.
