Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala - A Spiritual Centre of Social Reform

Sivagiri Mutt was founded in the early 20th century by Sree Narayana Guru, a pivotal figure in Kerala's social reform movement. He established it as a center for his spiritual and social activities. In 1912, he consecrated the Sharada Temple here, uniquely dedicating it to the goddess of knowledge and welcoming people from all castes. After attaining Mahasamadhi in 1928, his tomb was enshrined on the hill. The Mutt has since grown into the headquarters of the Sree Narayana Dharma Sangham Trust and a major pilgrimage destination, attracting thousands of devotees, especially during the annual Sivagiri Pilgrimage initiated by the Guru.

Sivagiri Mutt's primary significance lies in its connection to Sree Narayana Guru and his revolutionary social teachings. It stands as a symbol of the fight against caste discrimination in Kerala. The Mutt is the global headquarters for his followers and promotes his philosophy of universal brotherhood. The annual Sivagiri Pilgrimage, held from December 30th to January 1st, is one of the most important spiritual events in Kerala, drawing pilgrims who traditionally wear yellow attire. The Sharada Temple within the complex is notable for being a place of worship focused on knowledge and open to all.
