Sringeri Sharada Peetham - Ancient Temple in Chikmagalur

Sringeri Sharada Peetham was established around 800 CE by Adi Shankaracharya, a pivotal figure in Hindu philosophy. He founded it to promote and preserve the teachings of Advaita Vedanta. The location was chosen after he witnessed a cobra shielding a spawning frog from the sun, a sight he interpreted as a symbol of harmony. While the Sharadamba Temple has been rebuilt over centuries, the remarkable Vidyashankara Temple was constructed in the 14th century by the Vijayanagara empire's founders, Harihara and Bukka. The Peetham has since been a continuous center for Vedic studies and spiritual leadership, guided by an unbroken lineage of Jagadgurus.

This Peetham is historically the most important of the four Advaita Vedanta monasteries founded by Adi Shankaracharya, making it a primary pilgrimage destination for followers of this tradition. It holds immense religious authority as the southern seat (Dakshinamnaya Peetham). Architecturally, the Vidyashankara Temple is significant for its unique design that merges different styles and its astronomical alignment with the zodiac. Culturally, it has been an uninterrupted center for the preservation and propagation of Sanskrit, Vedic rituals, and philosophical discourse for over twelve centuries.
