The church's history dates back to the 16th century when Portuguese missionaries first built a structure made of wood. It was reconstructed in 1584 under the guidance of Father Jacomo Fenicio, a Jesuit priest who was popular among the local community. The church was dedicated to St. Andrew the Apostle.
