St. Francis Church - India's Oldest European Church in Kochi

Originally built in 1503 by Portuguese Franciscan friars, St. Francis Church started as a modest wooden structure dedicated to St. Bartholomew. It was reconstructed in stone around 1516. The church has witnessed the entire arc of European colonial history in India, passing from Portuguese to Dutch hands in 1663, who converted it to a government church. In 1795, the British took control and placed it under the Anglican Church. Explorer Vasco da Gama was initially buried here in 1524 before his remains were exhumed and moved to Lisbon fourteen years later. In 1947, after India's independence, the congregation joined the Church of South India.

St. Francis Church is historically significant as a silent witness to the European colonial struggle in the subcontinent. Its architecture is a straightforward representation of early Portuguese design, later modified by Dutch and British refurbishments, making it a unique structural document of its time.
