Sudh Mahadev Temple - An Ancient Shiva Shrine near Patnitop

The temple's origins are rooted in ancient legends, with estimates placing its construction around 2800 years ago. According to local lore, Lord Shiva was in a deep meditative state when a demon named Sudheet approached to pay his respects. Goddess Parvati, seeing the demon, shrieked, which broke Shiva's concentration. In a moment of impulse, Shiva opened his third eye and hurled his trident, killing the demon. Upon realizing Sudheet was a devotee, Shiva offered to bring him back to life, but the demon chose to die at the hands of the lord. The temple was built at this very spot, and the broken trident is preserved here. The temple was later renovated by Raja Ramchand of Chenani.

Sudh Mahadev Temple is a major pilgrimage center in the Jammu region, drawing thousands of devotees, especially during the festival of Sawan. Its primary significance comes from the Svayambhu (self-manifested) Shiva Lingam and the legendary trident of Lord Shiva. The 'Pap Nashni Bowli', a holy spring, adds to its religious importance, with pilgrims taking a holy bath before entering the temple. The temple serves as a focal point for the annual 3-day fair held in June-July, which celebrates the divine union of Shiva and Parvati, attracting visitors from all over the state.
