Sweet Falls Shillong - A Guide to Meghalaya's Steepest Waterfall

As a natural landform, Sweet Falls does not have a construction history. Its local Khasi name is 'Kshaid Weitden'. The waterfall has been a known landmark for local communities for generations, often associated with folklore and cautionary tales due to the dangerous terrain and numerous accidents that have occurred here. It gained popularity as a tourist spot as Shillong developed into a major travel destination. The name 'Sweet Falls' is believed to have been given for its appearance, which contrasts sharply with its dangerous reputation. The site remains largely undeveloped to preserve its natural state.

Sweet Falls is significant for its dramatic natural form; it's one of the steepest and most forceful single-plunge waterfalls in Meghalaya. Its reputation in local Khasi folklore as a place of ill omen makes it culturally unique and adds a layer of intrigue for visitors. Despite, or perhaps because of, its dangerous reputation, it remains a popular spot for thrill-seekers and nature photographers looking to witness the raw power of nature. The waterfall serves as a stark reminder of nature's beauty and peril, making it a memorable and impactful destination for those who visit.
