History

Originally named Jag Niwas, this palace was built between 1743 and 1746 under the direction of Maharana Jagat Singh II of the Mewar dynasty. It served as a royal summer retreat and a place for lavish courtly events. After a period of decline, Maharana Bhagwat Singh undertook its restoration, converting it into Udaipur's first luxury hotel in 1963. In 1971, the Taj Hotels group took over its management, preserving its heritage while upgrading it to world-class standards. The palace gained international fame after being featured in the 1983 James Bond film, 'Octopussy'.
