Best Season:The best time to visit is from July to October. During these monsoon months, the waterfall is at its most powerful and the surrounding forest is lush and green. The trek is more challenging due to rain and slippery paths but also more rewarding. From November to January, the water flow reduces but the weather is pleasant for trekking. Avoid visiting from March to May, as the waterfall is often completely dry and the heat is intense.

History & Significance

Learn about the story and cultural importance of this destination

History

While the waterfall is a natural formation, its accessibility and context are defined by the nearby Mahadev Temple at Tambdi Surla. The temple is the oldest in Goa, dating back to the 12th century, and is attributed to the Kadamba dynasty. It is a protected monument of national importance. The temple survived various invasions because of its remote location in the foothills of the Western Ghats. The trail to the waterfall begins near this historic site, linking a significant cultural landmark with a natural one. The trek itself follows old forest paths used by locals for generations.

Significance

The significance of Tambdi Surla Waterfalls lies in its remote location within a protected wildlife sanctuary, making it a prime example of Goa's hinterland ecology. The journey to the falls is as important as the destination, highlighting the region's biodiversity. It's popular among trekkers and nature enthusiasts looking for an experience beyond the state's coastline. The combination of an adventurous trek with a visit to the ancient and architecturally unique Mahadev Temple makes this a distinct cultural and natural excursion.
