Tawang War Memorial - A Tribute to the Heroes of 1962

The Tawang War Memorial is a solemn and poignant structure dedicated to the soldiers of the Indian Army who lost their lives during the 1962 Sino-Indian War. Designed in the style of a traditional Buddhist stupa, known as a Chorten, it stands 40 feet high and overlooks the scenic Tawang-chu valley. The memorial is a multi-level structure; the base level contains a museum with two main halls. These halls display personal articles of the soldiers, weapons used during the war, photographs, and maps that narrate the story of the conflict. Visitors can walk around the main stupa, where the names of over 2,400 martyrs are etched onto black granite plaques arranged in a circular formation. The atmosphere is one of deep respect and remembrance, offering a powerful insight into the region's history and the sacrifices made by the armed forces. An evening light and sound show brings the stories of heroism to life, making it a very moving experience for all who visit.
