Best Season:The best time to visit Thajiwas Glacier is from April to October. During these months, the road to Sonmarg is open, and the weather is suitable for the trek or pony ride. Snow is present at the glacier even in peak summer (May-June), which is the main tourist season. September and October offer clear skies after the monsoon. Sonmarg is often inaccessible from November to March due to heavy snowfall closing the Zoji La pass.

Thajiwas Glacier is a prominent and accessible glacier located just a few kilometers from Sonmarg town. The journey to the glacier is an experience in itself, taking you through lush green meadows, alongside a clear stream originating from the glacier, and past several small waterfalls. Visitors can reach the main snow point either by a 3-kilometer trek or by hiring a pony, which is a very popular option. The trek is relatively easy but can be muddy or slushy depending on the season, so proper footwear is important.

As a natural attraction, there are no official opening or closing times. However, pony rides and other services operate only during daylight hours, typically from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM. It is unsafe and not recommended to visit after dark.

There is no official entry fee for the glacier. However, visitors must pay for transportation. A pony ride can cost between ₹700 to ₹1500 per person for a round trip, subject to negotiation. Sledding charges are separate, around ₹100-₹300. There may also be a local union fee for vehicles entering the Sonmarg area.
