Overview

Thangkharang Park is a well-maintained viewpoint park located on the edge of a cliff, about 12 kilometers from the main Cherrapunji town. Managed by the State Forest Department, its main draw is the incredible panoramic view it provides. From here, you get a direct and expansive sight of the three-tiered Kynrem Falls, one of India's tallest waterfalls. On a clear day, the vista extends far beyond the hills, offering a sweeping look at the plains of Bangladesh stretching out to the horizon.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit depends on your priority. For the most spectacular waterfall views, the monsoon season from June to September is ideal, as Kynrem Falls is in full flow. However, clouds might obscure the view of the plains. For clear, long-distance views of the Bangladesh plains, the post-monsoon and winter months from October to February are perfect. The weather is pleasant and the skies are generally clear during this period, though the waterfall's flow is reduced.
Peak Crowd: October-January, weekends, and public holidays, due to peak tourist season with clear weather.
Moderate Crowd: June-September, as monsoon weather attracts waterfall enthusiasts.
Low Crowd: March-May, when it's often hazy, and visitor numbers are lower.

How to Reach

Air

The nearest major airport is Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (GAU), approximately 180 km away (5-6 hours by road). Shillong Airport (SHL) at Umroi is closer (about 80 km) but has limited flight connectivity.

Train

Guwahati Railway Station (GHY) is the nearest major railhead, located about 180 km from Cherrapunji. You can hire a taxi or take a bus from Guwahati to Shillong, and then proceed to Cherrapunji.

Road

Cherrapunji is well-connected by road from Shillong (around 55 km). You can hire a private taxi, or take a shared taxi or state-run bus from Shillong's Anjali Cinema taxi stand to reach Cherrapunji.
