Theni: A Scenic Escape into Tamil Nadu's Countryside

Historically, the Theni region was part of the Madurai Nayak Kingdom. For centuries, it has been a significant agricultural and trade route between Kerala and Tamil Nadu, particularly for spices like cardamom. The modern town grew in importance as a commercial center after Indian independence. Theni district was officially formed on January 1, 1997, by carving out territories from the old Madurai district. Its establishment helped in better administration of this agriculturally rich and geographically important area bordering the Western Ghats.

Theni's primary significance is economic and agricultural. It is a major trading center for cardamom, coffee, tea, and grapes in South India. The Cumbum Valley is one of the few places in Tamil Nadu where grapes are grown year-round.
