Until the 1930s, Kovalam was a small fishing village. Later, her nephew, the Maharaja of Travancore, started promoting the location among his European guests. The area gained international attention in the early 1970s when it became a popular stop on the hippie trail. This influx of international visitors transformed Kovalam from a quiet village into the bustling beach destination it is today, though it still retains pockets of its original fishing community charm.
