Overview

Kovalam is a world-famous beach destination known for its three adjacent crescent-shaped beaches separated by rocky outcrops. The largest and most popular of these is Lighthouse Beach, named after the 30-meter high Vizhinjam Lighthouse that stands on a rocky cape. Visitors can climb to the top of the lighthouse for a wide view of the coastline. The second beach is Hawah Beach, also known as Eve's Beach, which is a center of activity for local fishermen in the early mornings. The third, Samudra Beach, is the northernmost part and is more separated, offering a quieter atmosphere with fewer crowds.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit Kovalam is from September to March. During these months, the weather is pleasant with calm seas and clear skies, perfect for swimming and other beach activities. The peak tourist season is from December to January, which means more crowds. The monsoon season, from June to August, brings heavy rainfall and rough seas, making most water activities unsafe, though it's a great time for those who enjoy the lush green scenery and fewer people.

Moderate Crowd: September-November and February-March, when the weather is still good but the main holiday rush is over.

How to Reach

Air

Trivandrum International Airport (TRV) is the nearest airport, located about 15 km away. It takes around 30-40 minutes to reach Kovalam by a pre-paid taxi or cab.

Train

Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station (TVC) is the closest major railhead, approximately 16 km away. The station is well-connected to all major cities in India. You can hire an auto-rickshaw or taxi from the station.

Road

Kovalam is connected to Thiruvananthapuram city and other parts of Kerala by a good road network. It's a short drive from NH-66. Regular state-run and private buses connect Thiruvananthapuram city to Kovalam.

Local Transport

Within Kovalam, walking is the best way to explore the beaches. For longer distances, auto-rickshaws are easily available. Taxis and app-based cab services like Uber and Ola also operate in the area. Scooters are available for rent as well.
