    About the Destination

    Overview

The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a 19.4-kilometer point-to-point hike located in New Zealand's Tongariro National Park. The trail winds through an active volcanic landscape, starting from the Mangatepopo Valley at 1,120 meters and climbing up to the Red Crater at 1,886 meters before descending through alpine shrubland to the Ketetahi road end. Visitors walk across dark scoria fields, past steaming fumaroles, and over rugged ancient lava flows. Key landmarks along the route include the prominent conical peak of Mount Ngauruhoe, the steep ascent known as the Devil's Staircase, and the highly visible Emerald Lakes. These geothermal pools get their distinct green and blue hues from dissolved volcanic minerals. A short distance further sits the Blue Lake, a cold acidic crater lake. The terrain changes drastically throughout the day, transitioning from barren, rocky alpine zones at the highest elevations to dense podocarp forest during the final descent.

    Visitor Tips

    • • Start your hike between 6:00 AM and 7:00 AM to ensure you complete the 19.4 km trail before sunset
    • • Book your mandatory shuttle transport weeks in advance, as trailhead parking is strictly limited to 4 hours
    • • Carry at least 2 to 3 liters of water per person, as there is no drinking water available on the track
    • • Pack a windproof and waterproof jacket, thermal layers, and gloves regardless of the summer forecast
    • • Check the official Department of Conservation (DOC) weather and volcanic activity alerts the morning of your hike
    • • Use hiking boots with strong ankle support due to the loose scoria rock on the descent from Red Crater
    • • Avoid the hike entirely if wind speeds are forecast above 50 km/h or heavy rain is expected

    Rules & Restrictions

    • • No drones allowed anywhere in the national park
    • • Do not touch or enter the water of the Emerald Lakes or Blue Lake
    • • No dogs or pets allowed on the track
    • • No camping permitted along the day-hike route
    • • No rubbish bins on site; all waste must be packed out
    • • No off-track walking due to fragile alpine vegetation and geothermal hazards

    Safety Information

    • • Pack a waterproof jacket, thermal layers, and a beanie regardless of how warm the morning seems
    • • Carry at least 2 to 3 liters of drinking water per person as there is no safe water source on the trail
    • • Check the Department of Conservation (DOC) volcanic activity and weather alerts before starting
    • • Pace yourself on the steep 'Devil's Staircase' and take frequent breaks to manage altitude exertion
    • • Ensure your phone is fully charged and carry a printed map, as cellular reception is extremely patchy
    • • Be highly cautious on the descent from Red Crater; the loose scoria rock causes frequent slips and falls
    • • Turn back if you experience strong winds or poor visibility before reaching the summit ridge

    Best Time to Visit

    • November to April offers the safest hiking conditions with warmer weather and clear paths. Summer months (January-February) are the busiest but provide the most stable climate. Winter hiking (May-October) requires specialized alpine equipment like ice axes and crampons, plus an experienced guide due to heavy snow and ice. Avoid days with high wind, heavy rain, or poor visibility forecasts at any time of year.
    • Peak Crowd: December to February and public holiday weekends, as summer weather attracts the maximum number of international and domestic hikers
    • Moderate Crowd: November, March, and April, offering manageable numbers before and after the core summer rush
    • Low Crowd: May to October, as winter alpine conditions restrict access to heavily equipped and guided hikers only

    How to Reach

    Air

Taupo Airport is the closest regional airport, located 85 km away (about 1.5 hours by car). Auckland International Airport is 340 km away (approximately 4.5 hours drive).

    Train

The Northern Explorer train runs between Auckland and Wellington, stopping at National Park Station, which is roughly 20 km from the trailhead.

    Road

The park is accessed via State Highway 47 and 46. Most visitors base themselves in Taupo, Turangi, or National Park Village and take a shuttle, as trailhead parking during summer is strictly limited to 4 hours.

    Your Questions, Answered

During the summer season (November to April), physically fit hikers do not need a guide as the track is well-marked. During the winter season (May to October), an experienced alpine guide is mandatory due to snow, ice, and avalanche risks.
Yes, basic long-drop (composting) toilets are located at the start, finish, and roughly every 1.5 to 2 hours along the route. You must bring your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer.
It is a challenging 19.4 km trek with steep ascents up to 1,886 meters, loose scoria rock descents, and total exposure to unpredictable alpine weather. Good physical fitness and proper preparation are essential.
No, stream and lake water in the park is high in volcanic minerals, acidic, and unsafe to drink. You must carry all your own drinking water (2-3 liters minimum per person).
Turn back immediately if conditions deteriorate before reaching the Red Crater. Shuttle companies proactively cancel trips if wind exceeds 50 km/h or heavy rain is forecast to ensure hiker safety.
