A challenging 19.4-kilometer volcanic trek featuring emerald lakes, active craters, and dramatic alpine scenery in New Zealand's dual World Heritage area.
The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a 19.4-kilometer point-to-point hike located in New Zealand's Tongariro National Park. The trail winds through an active volcanic landscape, starting from the Mangatepopo Valley at 1,120 meters and climbing up to the Red Crater at 1,886 meters before descending through alpine shrubland to the Ketetahi road end. Visitors walk across dark scoria fields, past steaming fumaroles, and over rugged ancient lava flows. Key landmarks along the route include the prominent conical peak of Mount Ngauruhoe, the steep ascent known as the Devil's Staircase, and the highly visible Emerald Lakes. These geothermal pools get their distinct green and blue hues from dissolved volcanic minerals. A short distance further sits the Blue Lake, a cold acidic crater lake. The terrain changes drastically throughout the day, transitioning from barren, rocky alpine zones at the highest elevations to dense podocarp forest during the final descent.
