Thiruvananthapuram Zoo - A Historic Wildlife Park in Kerala

Established in 1857 by the Maharaja of Travancore, Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma, the Trivandrum Zoo is one of the oldest in the country. Initially created as a recreational park for the royal family and the elite, it was later formally established as a zoo to conserve wildlife. The initial layout was intended to be an attraction, but over the years, the focus shifted towards conservation and education. In the late 20th century, a major modernization plan was implemented to replace the old, restrictive cages with more spacious, open-air enclosures that simulate the animals' natural environments. Today, it operates as a modern zoological park focused on wildlife conservation and public awareness.

The Thiruvananthapuram Zoo holds historical importance as a pioneering zoological garden in India. Its unique design, which integrates the zoo with a lush botanical garden, provides a distinct experience for visitors. The zoo plays a crucial role in the conservation of endangered species, particularly endemic animals of the Western Ghats like the Lion-tailed Macaque and Nilgiri Langur. It serves as a vital center for education and research in the region, promoting awareness about wildlife and biodiversity. Its location within the same compound as the Napier Museum and Sree Chitra Art Gallery makes it a central hub for culture, art, and nature in the city.
