Overview

The Thiruvananthapuram Zoo, one of the oldest in India, is spread across 36 acres of woodland and gardens right in the heart of the city. It's part of a larger complex that also includes the Napier Museum and the Sree Chitra Art Gallery. The zoo is designed more like a botanical garden with winding paths, large trees, and well-kept enclosures. Visitors can see a wide variety of animals, from Indian species like the Lion-tailed Macaque, Nilgiri Langur, Indian Rhino, and Royal Bengal Tiger to exotic animals such as giraffes, zebras, and Cape buffaloes.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit is from September to March when the weather in Thiruvananthapuram is pleasant and comfortable for walking around. During these months, the humidity is lower and temperatures are moderate. Avoid the peak summer months of April and May, which can be very hot and humid. The monsoon season, from June to August, experiences heavy rainfall which might disrupt your visit, although the surroundings are incredibly green during this time.
Peak Crowd: December-January, weekends, and school holidays, due to peak tourist season and pleasant weather.
Moderate Crowd: September-November and February-March, especially on weekday afternoons.

Air

Trivandrum International Airport (TRV) is the nearest airport, located about 7 km away. It takes around 20-30 minutes to reach the zoo by taxi or auto-rickshaw.

Train

Thiruvananthapuram Central Railway Station (TVC) is the main railhead, just 3 km from the zoo. You can hire an auto-rickshaw or taxi from the station.

Road

The zoo is located on a major road in the city and is easily accessible. KSRTC buses from other cities in Kerala and neighboring states connect to the Thampanoor bus stand, which is 3 km away.

Local Transport

Local KSRTC city buses have a stop named 'Museum' right in front of the zoo complex. Auto-rickshaws and taxis, including app-based services like Ola and Uber, are widely available throughout the city.
