Udaipur Solar Observatory - A Unique Scientific Landmark

The Udaipur Solar Observatory was established in 1976 by Dr. Arvind Bhatnagar, following the model of the Big Bear Solar Observatory in California. The site was chosen specifically because the large water body of Lake Fatehsagar helps in stabilizing the air, which is crucial for high-resolution solar imaging. Initially started with a modest telescope, it has grown significantly over the decades. It is now managed by the Physical Research Laboratory (PRL), a unit of the Department of Space, Government of India. The facility was upgraded with the addition of the state-of-the-art Multi-Application Solar Telescope (MAST) in 2015, making it a key center for solar physics research in the country.

This observatory holds significant scientific importance as one of the few in the world situated on an island. This unique location provides exceptionally stable atmospheric conditions, allowing for clearer and more detailed solar observations than most land-based sites. It plays a crucial role in India's space research program, contributing vital data for understanding solar activities and their impact on space weather. Its advanced instruments, particularly the MAST, position it as a leading ground-based facility for helioseismology and the study of the sun's magnetic fields.
