Overview

Located on a small island in the middle of Lake Fatehsagar, the Udaipur Solar Observatory is a unique scientific institution. It's considered one of the best sites in Asia for solar observation due to the surrounding water, which reduces air turbulence and improves image clarity. The observatory is managed by the Physical Research Laboratory in Ahmedabad and is an active center for research in solar physics.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Udaipur for a boat ride to see the observatory is from October to March. During these months, the weather is pleasant with clear skies and comfortable temperatures ranging from 12°C to 30°C. This period is ideal for boating on Lake Fatehsagar. Avoid the summer months of April to June, when temperatures can exceed 40°C. The monsoon season (July to September) offers lush green surroundings but boat services may be temporarily suspended during heavy rain.
Peak Crowd: November-January, weekends, and public holidays, as this is the peak tourist season in Udaipur with pleasant weather.
Moderate Crowd: February-March, September-October, during weekdays.
Low Crowd: April-June due to extreme heat and during the monsoon months of July-August.

How to Reach

Air

Maharana Pratap Airport (UDR) in Dabok is the nearest airport, located about 25 km from Fatehsagar Lake. A taxi from the airport to the lake takes around 45-60 minutes.

Train

Udaipur City Railway Station (UDZ) is about 6 km from Fatehsagar Lake. It is well-connected to major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Jaipur. Auto-rickshaws and taxis are readily available at the station.

Road

Udaipur is well-connected by National Highway 48 and other state highways. Regular government and private bus services run from cities like Jaipur (400 km), Ahmedabad (260 km), and Delhi (660 km).

Local Transport

To reach Fatehsagar Lake, you can use auto-rickshaws, taxis, or app-based services like Ola and Uber. Local city buses also operate on routes near the lake. Rental scooters and bikes are also popular options for getting around.
