A stunning Kerala beach known for its unique red cliffs, cliff-top walkway with cafes, and a relaxed, bohemian atmosphere.
Discover what makes this destination truly special

Varkala Beach is distinguished by its dramatic red laterite cliffs that run alongside the Arabian Sea, a geological feature unique to this part of Kerala. The main tourist area is centered around the North Cliff, which has a paved walkway lined with a continuous stretch of guesthouses, restaurants, cafes, and shops. From here, steep staircases lead down to the sandy shore below. The atmosphere on the cliff is relaxed and international, with many visitors practicing yoga or enjoying meals with an ocean view. The southern part of the beach, known as Papanasam Beach, is quieter and holds religious importance for locals. Visitors can swim, try surfing, or go paragliding from the cliff top during the season. The beach itself is a long stretch of golden sand, ideal for sunbathing and long walks, especially during the beautiful sunsets.
