Sivagiri Mutt is a significant spiritual and pilgrimage center located on a hill in Varkala. It is the final resting place, or 'Samadhi', of the revered social reformer and sage, Sree Narayana Guru. The atmosphere here is calm and reflective, drawing both devotees and those seeking peace. The main complex includes the Guru's Samadhi Mandapam, a memorial hall where his remains are enshrined, and the uniquely octagonal Sharada Temple, dedicated to Saraswati, the goddess of knowledge. This temple was consecrated by the Guru himself.

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit is from October to March when the weather is pleasant and cool. The most important period is the Sivagiri Pilgrimage, from December 30th to January 1st, which offers a unique cultural experience but is extremely crowded. For a peaceful visit, plan your trip outside of this pilgrimage period, on a weekday. The monsoon season, from June to September, sees heavy rainfall, which might hinder sightseeing.

Moderate Crowd: October to March on weekdays.
Low Crowd: April to September, especially during the monsoon months of June to August.

How to Reach

Air

Trivandrum International Airport (TRV) is the nearest airport, about 45 km away. A taxi from the airport to Sivagiri Mutt takes approximately 1 to 1.5 hours.

Train

Varkala Sivagiri Railway Station (VAK) is the closest station, located just 3 km from the Mutt. It is well-connected to Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi, and other major Indian cities. Auto-rickshaws and taxis are available at the station.

Road

Varkala is easily accessible via NH 66. Regular KSRTC and private buses connect Varkala with Thiruvananthapuram (50 km), Kollam (35 km), and other towns in Kerala.
