Sivagiri Mutt, Varkala - Spiritual Center of Sree Narayana Guru

Sivagiri Mutt was established by Sree Narayana Guru in the early 20th century as a center for his spiritual and social activities. In 1912, he consecrated the Sharada Temple here, dedicated to the Goddess of Knowledge, emphasizing the importance of education for social upliftment. The Mutt became the headquarters for the Sree Narayana Dharma Sangham, an order of monks who propagate his teachings. After Sree Narayana Guru attained Samadhi on September 20, 1928, his mortal remains were entombed here. Since then, Sivagiri Mutt has grown into a prominent pilgrimage destination for his followers worldwide.

Sivagiri Mutt holds immense cultural and religious importance as the 'Mahasamadhi' of Sree Narayana Guru, a key figure in Kerala's renaissance. It is the global headquarters for his followers and promotes his universal message of equality and spiritual enlightenment. The Mutt is the focal point of the annual Sivagiri Pilgrimage, held from December 30 to January 1, which attracts hundreds of thousands of devotees dressed in yellow attire. This event reinforces the Guru's principles of education, cleanliness, and devotion, making the Mutt a living center of his philosophy.
